The historical Fianna or fían were essentially roving bands of young, often aristocratic, landless warriors who existed in early medieval Gaelic Ireland. These men, typically past the age of childhood fosterage but not yet settled on their land or in their status, lived a semi-independent life in the wilderness.
They would act as mercenaries or a standing force for local nobility. Surviving in the wild was a significant part of their development and an important rite of passage, preparing them for future in their túatha (clans or territories).

While rooted in these historical figures, the Fianna were later elevated into one of the most prominent warrior bands in Irish mythology, central to the Fenian Cycle of tales. In legend, they became a well organized, elite group led by the wise and heroic Fionn mac Cumhaill, serving the High King of Ireland. These legendary Fianna possessed supernatural abilities, unparalleled skill in arms, and a deep connection to the natural world.
